Use testing tools like OTDRs, spectrum analyzers, and volt/ohm meters **Job Description: Telecom TechnicianJob Title** Telecom Technician (also known as Telecommunications Technician, Network Technician, or Communications Technician) **Reports To** Field Service Manager / Telecommunications Supervisor / Network Operations Manager **Job Summary** The Telecom Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and testing of telecommunications systems, including voice, data, fiber optic, and wireless networks. This role ensures reliable connectivity for customers by troubleshooting issues, configuring equipment, and adhering to industry safety and compliance standards. **Key ResponsibilitiesInstallation \& Configuration** * Install, terminate, and test copper (Cat5e, Cat6\) and fiber optic cabling (single\-mode, multi\-mode). * Set up and configure telecom equipment such as routers, switches, PBX systems, modems, and VoIP devices. * Mount and align antennas, dish hardware, and other wireless communication devices. * Install cable trays, ladder racks, junction boxes, and patch panels. **Maintenance \& Repair** * Diagnose and resolve service interruptions, signal degradation, and hardware failures. * Perform routine preventive maintenance on network infrastructure and backup systems. * Replace or repair faulty cables, connectors, amplifiers, and power supplies. * Respond to emergency service calls and outages within defined SLAs. **Testing \& Troubleshooting** * Use testing tools such as OTDRs, spectrum analyzers, volt/ohm meters, and TDRs. * Perform continuity, resistance, and signal strength tests to ensure system integrity. * Interpret network maps, blueprints, and technical schematics to locate and resolve faults. **Documentation \& Compliance** * Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, test results, and inventory. * Label cables and equipment per industry and company standards (e.g., TIA/EIA). * Ensure all work complies with local building codes, NEC, OSHA, and company safety policies. **Customer Interaction (if applicable)** * Communicate with customers to explain work, timelines, and post\-installation usage. * Train end\-users on basic operation of telecom equipment (e.g., VoIP phones). * Represent the company professionally in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. **Required QualificationsEducation** * High school diploma or equivalent (GED). * Associate degree in Telecommunications, Electronics, Networking, or related field preferred. **Certifications (any of the following are a plus)** * BICSI Installer (e.g., Technician, Installer 2\) * CompTIA Network\+ * Cisco CCENT or CCNA * Manufacturer certs (e.g., Avaya, Mitel, Polycom) **Experience** * 1–3 years of hands\-on experience in telecom, network cabling, or related field. **Technical Skills** * Proficiency with cable termination (RJ45, RJ11, coaxial, fiber connectors LC/SC/ST). * Familiarity with networking basics (IP addressing, VLANs, PoE). * Ability to read and interpret wiring diagrams and floor plans. * Experience with test equipment (fluke testers, OTDR, light meters, voltmeters). **Soft Skills** * Strong problem\-solving and analytical thinking. * Effective written and verbal communication. * Attention to detail and organizational ability. * Ability to work independently and within a team. * Customer service orientation. **Physical Requirements** * Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (tools, ladders, equipment). * Comfortable working at heights (ladders, scissor lifts, rooftops) and in confined spaces (attics, crawlspaces, equipment closets). * Manual dexterity for fine cable and connector work. * Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (if field\-based). * Willingness to work on\-call shifts, evenings, or weekends as needed.
