Summary: A Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive patient care, coordinates treatment plans, and advocates for patient needs in diverse healthcare settings. Highlights: 1. Act as a patient advocate, ensuring patient needs are met **Core Responsibilities \& Duties** While the day\-to\-day tasks can vary significantly by specialty, the core responsibilities of an RN include: * **Patient Assessment:** Conducting comprehensive health assessments by taking vital signs, reviewing medical history, noting symptoms, and monitoring changes in a patient's condition. * **Care Planning:** Developing and implementing individualized nursing care plans based on patient assessments, diagnoses, and doctor's orders. This includes setting goals and evaluating progress. * **Treatment \& Procedures:** Administering medications, wound care, starting intravenous (IV) lines, drawing blood, assisting with surgeries or medical procedures, and operating medical equipment. * **Patient \& Family Education:** Teaching patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries at home, explaining medication side effects, instructing on post\-hospital care, and promoting preventive health practices (e.g., diet, exercise, vaccinations). * **Care Coordination:** Collaborating with physicians, surgeons, physical therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure a cohesive treatment plan. * **Advocacy:** Acting as a patient advocate, ensuring the patient's needs, wishes, and rights are respected within the medical system. * **Documentation:** Meticulously recording patient information, treatments rendered, and changes in condition in electronic health records (EHRs) for legal and medical accuracy. **Common Work Environments** RNs work in diverse settings. The nature of the job changes dramatically depending on the location: * **Hospitals (the most common setting):** Work in specialized units like: * **Emergency Room (ER):** Fast\-paced, critical, and unpredictable. * **Intensive Care Unit (ICU):** High\-acuity, critically ill patients requiring constant monitoring. * **Medical\-Surgical (Med\-Surg):** General care for a wide variety of patients. * **Operating Room (OR):** Circulating or scrubbing in on surgeries. * **Labor \& Delivery (L\&D):** Caring for mothers during childbirth and postpartum. * **Ambulatory/Outpatient Clinics:** Physician offices, urgent care centers, dialysis centers, and infusion clinics (more predictable hours, no nights/weekends often). * **Long\-Term Care Facilities:** Nursing homes and rehabilitation centers (caring for elderly or chronically ill patients). * **Home Health:** Traveling to patients' homes to provide care (highly autonomous). * **Public Health/Community Health:** Working for government or non\-profits on community wellness, disease prevention, and health education. * **Schools/Universities:** Providing first aid, managing student health plans, and conducting health screenings. * **Telehealth:** Providing nursing advice, triage, and follow\-up care remotely over the phone or video. **Essential Skills \& Qualities** * **Clinical \& Technical Proficiency:** Mastery of nursing procedures, medication administration, and medical technology. * **Critical Thinking \& Problem\-Solving:** The ability to assess a situation quickly, spot changes in a patient's condition, and make fast, sound decisions. * **Communication:** Clear, compassionate communication with patients, families, and colleagues.
