Description
Summary:
Lead mechanical design, analysis, and validation for complex systems, providing technical leadership and driving continuous improvement in engineering practices and reliability.
Highlights:
1. Lead detailed mechanical design, analysis, and validation.
2. Provide technical leadership on manufacturability and supplier management.
3. Drive continuous improvement in design practices and reliability engineering.
**Key responsibilities**
* Lead detailed mechanical design for systems and components (HVAC, piping, rotating equipment, pressure vessels, HVAC, mechanical assemblies) using CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA) and produce manufacturing drawings and BOMs.
* Perform engineering analysis: FEA, thermal, vibration, stress, fluid dynamics (CFD) and validate designs against requirements and standards.
* Define specifications, material selection, tolerances, and test criteria; oversee prototype build, testing, and validation.
* Provide technical leadership on manufacturability, assembly processes, and supplier selection; review vendor drawings and manage supplier escalations.
* Develop and approve mechanical design documents, P\&IDs, schematics, and technical reports; ensure compliance with codes and industry standards (ASME, ISO, EN, API as applicable).
* Mentor and review work of junior engineers and designers; lead design reviews and technical workshops.
* Support project planning: resource estimates, risk registers, change control, and schedule tracking; liaise with project managers and multidisciplinary teams (electrical, controls, structural).
* Drive continuous improvement in design practices, DFMA, cost reduction, and reliability engineering (FMEA, root\-cause analysis).
* Oversee commissioning, failure investigations, maintenance support, and lifecycle engineering considerations.
* Ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental requirements in design and field activities.
**Required skills \& qualifications**
* Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BEng/BSc/MEng) or equivalent; Chartered status desirable for senior roles.
* 8\+ years’ mechanical engineering experience with responsibility for detailed design and project delivery.
* Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor, CATIA) and engineering analysis tools (ANSYS, Nastran, Fluent or similar).
* Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, materials, manufacturing processes, GD\&T, and tolerance analysis.
* Experience with relevant codes and standards (ASME, ISO, EN, API) and certification/regulatory processes where applicable.
* Proven leadership, project management, and supplier management skills.
* Excellent technical communication and report\-writing skills.
**Desirable**
* Experience in sector\-specific domains (industrial equipment, oil \& gas, automotive, aerospace, HVAC, or energy), PLM/PDM systems, and knowledge of control systems integration.
* Familiarity with additive manufacturing, surface engineering, corrosion mitigation, and sustainability\-focused design practices.
* Training in FMEA, Six Sigma, or reliability engineering.
**Typical metrics / KPIs**
* On\-time delivery of design packages and change\-order turnaround.
* Number of design\-related field failures and mean time between failures (MTBF).
* Cost variance against budget for mechanical scope and manufacturing yield.
* Number of design improvements implemented and supplier quality metrics.
